Who we are
Things They Know began as a personal project — a way for me to stay connected with my mum, who still loves reading but sometimes finds longer or more complex books difficult. I wanted something simple, warm and familiar that we could enjoy together, even on days when words come slowly or energy is low.
From that idea came a series of picture books designed to work for everyone. The stories are short, the images are gentle, and each page offers a moment of recognition — something to point to, comment on or simply smile about.
The books draw on research about readable design, including high-contrast layouts, uncluttered pages and clear, everyday themes. They’re not clinical tools or therapeutic resources — they’re simply books made to be shared. Books that spark connection.
Families use them as thoughtful gifts. Grandchildren read them to grandparents. Aged-care staff use them as conversation starters. And for many people, including my mum, they offer a joyful, grounding way to stay engaged with reading.
This is a series built on love, lived experience and the belief that simple stories can mean a great deal.
